Mainzer Johannisnacht

The Johannis-Festival takes place annually around Johannistag, 24 June. The festival was grounded in 1968 to honour the Mainzer Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of printing with movable type.
Typical events are for example: "Schifferstechen" (ship-lancing), a fight with lances between two boats on the Rhine and the "Buchdruckertaufe" (printers-baptism also known as "Gautschen“), the traditional baptism ritual of the printers and typesetters guild. Through this ritual the apprentice is cleansed of the sins of his apprenticeship and is accepted into Gutenbergs-gild as a true black artist.

Besides the above the festival offers all manner of wines, foods and amusements.

Mainzer Johannisnacht is every year in the end of June.
