In Rhineland-Palatinate the past has
left its traces everywhere. There is hardly a view
without
a palace or castle. And if castles are your thing,
then the medieval castle Marksburg near
Braubach is worth a visit. As it has never been destroyed
it offers
an example of unadulterated middle-ages architecture.
It is also the seat of the Deutschen
Burgenvereinigung (German
castle society), which can provide you with further
information on Germany’s castles.
Speyer is another town for history
buffs. The Kaiserdom, (Emperor’s Cathedral)
whose crypt is the burial place of numerous important
figures of the middle ages,
is regarded as one of the greatest examples of romantic
architecture in Germany. You can find still more history
in the Historischen
Museum der Pfalz.
