50 Million people live on and around the Rhine, at 1320 km
it is he longest river in Germany. The Rhine is soaked in
history. It has seen many wars, has separated peoples and
united them.
The traces of its colourful past can be seen in particular
between Bingen and Koblenz in
the Mittelrheintal (Middle-Rhine-Valley), which was declared
a world heritage site by UNESCO in 2002.
A myriad of Burgen (castles) sit on the Rhine cliffs next
to breathtakingly steep vineyards. The mythical Loreley,a
siren who would lure sailors to their deaths, now lures
the tourists who want to experience this stretch of the river’s
romantic charm, as does the unique: Rhein
in Flammen (Rhine in Flames), spectacle when fire illuminates
the valley and fireworks light up the night sky.
