Trier,
"the second Rome”, a daring comparison, though
fitting. The town is full of remnants of Roman times.
Theatres,
baths and other works of architecture still reflect the
former special relationship between the two towns. There
has been hardly a history class in Rhineland-Palatinate,
that hasn’t (at least in spirit) toured Trier.
The Porta Negra,
the Roman city gate is probably the town’s
most impressive piece of architecture. No less impressive,
however are the Basilica and the amphitheatre. This Roman
backdrop provides an excellent setting for concerts and
exhibitions. The array of exquisite Mosel-wines which one
can enjoy in
any of the bars or hotels in Trier’s old town, enhance
the towns distinctive atmosphere.
