In May of each year the Gutenberg Marathon takes place in Mainz, the city of printing. The competitors run the classic race, through the cities medieval old town.

Middle Rhine Marathon

Since 2005 the Rhine Valley belongs a whole weekend in mid-June to runners – a half marathon distance or a whole marathon may be accomplished either on foot or on roller/inline skates. Nordic walking fans may also participate, and in 2007 there was for the first time an extra competition for very young athletes: pupils born between 1992 and 1999 run a mini-marathon to collect money for charity.
